Hillside’s Fourth of July Parade and Picnic are an annual tradition. Children young and old decorate bikes, scooters and wagons and weave their way down Cumberland Rd. from NW Powhatan to Hillside Community Center with a Portland Police escort. The parade is followed by a neighborhood picnic sponsored by Hillside Neighborhood Association and staffed by Hillside Community Center.
Neighbors contribute salads and desserts. The fire department pays a ceremonial visit to the event and on hot days sprays the crowd with fire hoses. Games and relay races for children complete the holiday event. Parade begins at 11:00 am at the intersection of NW Powhatan and NW Cumberland Rd.
